PERSONALITY: Remus Lupin is a very private person and is slow to trust people, which stems from the prejudices he has dealt with because of his being a Werewolf. A fear of rejection has also arose because of this condition although he has been known to stand up to and for his friends when the situation called for it. Despite the prejudices he has suffered in his life, thus far, Remus remains fair minded and gentle towards others who may be different from himself and unlike his friends, he never partook in the various instances of bullying that they tended to find enjoyment and amusement out of. However, Remus never tried to stop said incidents and instead tended to ignore them, possibly out of his fear that his friends would decide that he wasn’t worth being friends with if he was going to ruin their fun or that they might decide to out him as a Werewolf to the whole school. Despite knowing his friends were better than that, he couldn’t stop worrying about it.
One incident in particular, however, almost confirmed his fears when Sirius sent Snape to the Shrieking Shack on a full moon, which almost resulted in Snape being attacked by a transformed Remus. It took Remus quite some time after that to be able to trust Sirius again and may have been one reason why, a few years later, he had suspected his friend of being a spy for Voldemort. This led to Remus losing practically everyone he was close to because the real spy went unnoticed and in the end Remus ended up virtually alone.
Despite his insecurities, Remus Lupin is a very intelligent individual, always taking his schoolwork far more seriously than his friends, which often made him the one they went to at the last minute in the hopes that he would help them and more often than not, Remus would. He had a deep respect for his professors and unlike his friends, paid attention in class instead of goofing off. He enjoys reading and learning new things and would often be found with his nose in a book on the rare occasion that he wasn’t with his friends. Remus may not have taken part in the bullying that his friends did, but being as smart as he was, he did tend to take part in the creation of the Marauders Map and was the first to point out flaws in James and Sirius’ various plans for pranks.
